We are pleased to share with you an article written by Edward Lozansky,  president of  American University in Moscow, which traces the history of the US-Russia relationship by way of his personal experience:  born in Kiev, educated in the USSR, a citizen of the US.  Mr. Lozansky traces the history of US-Russia relations while the USSR was still intact, after the dissolution of the USSR, the initial period of euphoria between the US and USSR, the adversarial position that many appointees in the Clinton administration took towards Russia, and the results that followed.

The article is an important historical overview by someone who was on the ground when the crucial events shaping US-Russia relations of the last 50 years were happening.  We recommend his perspective to your attention as he analyzes the tragic role that US policymakers took soon after the Russian Federation became an independent nation when the cold war ended in 1991. It also traces the events leading up to the current crisis in Ukraine, a tragedy that has befallen both Ukrainian and Russian citizens.

Clearing the Fog of “Unprovoked” War

For the record: I was born in Ukraine, studied in Russia, and worked in America as a laser fusion researcher and Professor of Mathematics and Physics. I have relatives and friends in all three countries, and for the last 35 years, I have been trying to do my best to make them friends, partners, or even allies. Instead, all three are now at war, even if some call the U.S. war only a war “by proxy.”

This looks like a total failure of my efforts, but I hope this short summary clears a bit the fog of war, which might help in the search for avoiding a worst-case scenario.

The exploration of why the US hates Russia is a fascinating and disturbing subject. It requires a little digging into history – the sufficiently close-up history that many of us can remember.

In the 1960’s and ‘70’s, terms like ‘détente’ and ‘rapprochement’ fell easily from the lips of many in the West, including the US, who appreciated the insanity of the arms race and any national “security” policy that depended upon the ability to destroy all life on earth in order to be “safe.” The US and Russia were in that mighty MAD standoff and, fortunately, humane people on both sides saw the madness. Serious efforts were made to develop diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations between the two adversaries and the results were so positive that we felt able to take a deep breath; maybe nuclear Armageddon wasn’t inevitable after all.

What happened? Why are we once again face-to-face with the unspeakable?

It is difficult to find anyone who wants to seriously consider the question – why does the West hate Russia so much? – when we are told daily that Russia is responsible for a murderous, unprovoked, devastating war of aggression that is destroying its innocent neighbor, while on a path to recreate the geographical scope and cultural influence of the USSR or Imperial Russia … or something even bigger and worse. Given that premise, it’s easy to stoke hatred.

But what if the premise is wrong? What if there is something both darker and more mundane at work in the official narrative?

Gilbert Doctorow has been studying, observing, working in, and writing about Russia since receiving his PhD in Russia Studies from Columbia University in the ‘70’s. In the interview below he explains the recent history and genesis of what can almost be called a Western pathology on the subject of Russia. It is a short but illuminating talk. Please note the amazement (or perplexity) on the young interviewer’s face as her belief in the “truth” of the official narrative is shaken.

The interviewer uses a journalistic technique similar to the winning formula of Tucker Carlson and the results, I believe, will both entertain and inform the audience.

The Duran team of Alex Christoforou and Alexander Mercouris recently interviewed Professor Jeffrey  Sachs for his views on the Vilnius NATO summit plus the history of US/Russia relations that brought us to where we are today – teetering on the brink of nuclear war. As always, Professor Sachs pulls no punches in his assessments. In the attached video he is clear on who he feels is to blame for deliberately, callously choosing war over peace.

Self-styled internet “fact checkers” call The Duran a right-wing, conspiracy pushing site that should be avoided; The Duran insists it is “… not right, left or center [but]…a media site that focuses on a pragmatic analysis of stories in the news.” What do you think? Is Professor Sachs pushing a right-wing agenda or is he a pragmatic analyst?

Thank you to Wyatt Reed, Alex Rubinstein and Anya Parampil for helping me prepare this presentation. Wyatt has first hand experience with the subject as a journalist whose hotel in Donetsk was targeted with a US-made howitzer by the Ukrainian military in October 2022. He was 100 meters away when the strike hit, and was nearly killed.

My friend, the civil rights activist Randy Credico, is also here with me today. He was in Donetsk more recently, and was able to witness regular HIMARS attacks by the Ukrainian military on civilian targets.

I’m here not only as a journalist with over 20 years of experience covering politics and conflict on several continents, but as an American dragooned by my own government into funding a proxy war that has become a threat to regional and international stability at the expense of the welfare of my fellow countrymen and women.
