Dear CCI Friends,
Last week we sent out two in-depth pieces that brought us face-to-face with our share of the responsibility for the tragedy in Ukraine. For many of us it is a history that is very painful to confront, made more so by the fact that much of it has been hidden from us. Or, perhaps it has been hidden in plain sight and we have preferred to ignore it.
On the theory that acknowledging an ugly reality and dealing with it is preferable to pretending it doesn’t exist, we are bringing you a perspective on the Ukraine/Russia/US disaster from Dr. Matt Bivens, a member of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. It was the predecessor to this group in California in the early 1980’s that set Sharon Tennison on her personal journey to prevent nuclear war by bringing Russian and American citizens together in peace. I know she would approve of Dr. Bivens’ message.

Another doctor confronted our responsibility several years ago in his book, “How the West Brought War to Ukraine.” If you have not yet seen it, please take a look at CCI traveler Ellen Taylor’s review. It is another deep dive into history that is mostly unknown or unacknowledged to most Americans.
